www.stuff.co.nz Polyfest draws 9000 students By TAO LIN The world’s largest Polynesian and Maori festival returned to Auckland in full force this year. The 39th annual ASB Polyfest ran from March 12 to 15 at the Manukau Sports Bowl. More than 9000 students from a record 62 schools, including Ormiston Senior College, Edgewater College and Botany Downs Senior College, took to the stage before an audience of about 100,000 people. That’s huge growth from the inaugural festival in 1976 when just four schools took part. The festival was officially opened by kaumatua Eru Thompson and a performance by host school Western Springs College. Mayor Len Brown says this year is ‘‘historic’’ for Polyfest, with a record number of schools taking part. ‘‘It gets bigger and better each year. ‘‘The Polynesian spirit is the heart and soul of this place,’’ Mr Brown says. ❚ The theme of this year’s event is ‘‘Care for our seas and our lands so that the safety of our home, both present and past, endures forever’’. Photo: BEN CAMPBELL Advertising Feature ‘ celebrates 30 years Graduates much sought after The International College of Camille has been setting the standards in beauty therapy training and education in New Zealand since 1984 and is currently celebrating its 30th birthday. The college grew out of the demand for profes- sional training and international qualifications in beauty therapy and advanced skills. The original campus was situated in Newmarket and in 2008 the college expanded by opening another campus in Albany on the North Shore. The college proudly continues to be 100 per cent New Zealand owned and operated. Talented tutor, Phillippa Craven, graduated from the College of Camille in 1989. ‘‘I found the team to be very supportive and thoroughly enjoyed my studies,’’ she says. She started her own very successful business and now enjoys giving back to the industry by tutoring others at the college. She loves sharing her experiences and watching the students develop into top notch therapists. Students are able to choose between full-time and part-time courses. The six month Beauty Specialist Diploma is a great way to gain entry into the industry, while the 12 month programme offers the highest recognition in the industry – allowing graduates to be more work ready and able to compete for the best jobs. The part-time options are geared to suit those who are working or have family obligations. The college specialises in various master classes for qualified beauty therapists which include courses in laser technology (IPL), red vein treatments, brazilian waxing, skin needling, skin peels and other treatments. Numbers are limited in each class to enable students to receive thorough and effective training and full access to equipment. Importantly, the college exudes warmth and ambience and students are treated with respect, making their stay rewarding and memorable.
