Do you like blue- berries? Who doesn t! Whether you are familiar with the extensive health benefits blue- berries have to offer or you just love the taste, now you can pick your own fruit at Blueberry Country -- New Zealand s largest blueberry orch- ard. Located near Ngatea, just an hour s drive from Auckland s CBD, Blue- berry Country is a com- mercial grower, supply- ing berries to super- markets in New Zealand and overseas. There s nothing better than tasting freshly pic- ked produce, and picking your own is a great way to support local family farms. It will also give you an excellent oppor- tunity to soak up the sun in the back to nature environs of Ngatea. It would be a real shame if overseas mar- kets were the only ones to get to taste fresh blue- berries. So from Decem- ber to March, the more than 160 hectares of bushes bursting with blueberries are thrown open to the public. Open every day from 8am to 7pm, you and your whole family are invited to pick away till your heart and taste buds are content. So dab yourself liber- ally with sun screen, put on your sun hats and gum boots -- don t even think heels -- grab a pail and start picking. Picking your own is more than saving money on retail shopping, Greg Furniss, director, Blue- berry Country says. It is a wholesome and healthy experience the whole family can enjoy. In fact, we encourage people to eat while they pick. Greg explains why the orchard is open for the public at this particular time of the year. It is our aim to give the best picking to the public, he says. We want more people to enjoy blueberries and the differences between the varieties. The tranquil environs of the Ngatea area are a welcome change from the Auckland traffic. Here, it is you, nature and blue- berries. But don t expect to have the whole place to yourself -- you ll find babies in pushchairs, young faces smeared blue, and the young at heart with walkers. The orchard has a cafe -- which is currently being extended to pro- vide a shaded area -- where you can enjoy their blueberry (what else!) ice-cream. They also have drinks and light meals, but you are always welcome to bring a picnic hamper and umbrella. And if the inner far- mer in you wants to transplant some of the experience back home, Blueberry Country offers a selection of plants from the nursery along with fertiliser, peat soil and bird netting covers. And if you feel re-ener- gised after all those delicious blueberries, why not pack in some sightseeing? The Water Gardens, Gemstone Fac- tory and Miranda Hot Springs may all suit as part of a day trip for out of towners. Blueberry Country is approximately 2km south of SH2 on Central Road South, near Ngatea. Also at 397 Jary Rd, off SH3 just south of Ohaupo.
