Concerts in East Auckland include an appearance by Kantuta, Chango Rey, king of the rumba, from 2pm on January 13 at Cockle Bay. Latin sensation Kantuta performs a style of modern Latino music and rhythms including salsa, meren- gue, modern latin dance tunes and classic Latin favourites. Spiral Band, The Nukes and inter- national guests Bosko and Honey will perform in Maraetai on January 28 from 2pm. Auckland Council s Music in Parks 2013 programme features more than 40 perfor- mances from January 2-March 24. Cars revved up for show Mean machine: Fergus Hope of Whangamata with his 1973 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at an earlier Kumeu hot rod show. Hundreds will be displayed at the next on January 19 and 20. If you like cars you ll be in petrolhead heaven at the 19th Woodstock Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival in Kumeu on January 19 and 20. Hundreds of cars will be lined up at the Kumeu Showgrounds for an expected 40,000 visitors. About 23 top-class hot rods and classic cars will feature in the main shed alone. The East Bay Rods club has 48 in its indoor display but most of the cars, from Corvettes and muscle cars to old- timers, will be spread around the grounds. Visitors can vote for their choice of car and awards will be given for best in show and other categories. Indoors, there will be a mini drag strip with racing models, and a speedway display. Drag cars will also be fired-up. Outdoors there will be modified hotsaw racing on the Saturday. There will be four, 40-minute demonstration shows and world champion axeman Jason Wynyard is expected to use the souped-up chainsaws. Sunday will see freestyle bike riders giv- ing four performances throughout the day. If you tire of the chrome and body work there ll be bands, trade stands, food outlets and more to check out. Show hours are Saturday 7am to 6pm, and Sunday 8am to 5pm. Entry is $15 per adult and free to under-12s.
