Auckland Regional After Hours Taskforce chairman Ian Scott says if someone is unwell they can go directly to an acci- dent and medical clinic. ‘‘For most non-emer- gencies they will to treat you as well or better than an emergency department and you may not have to wait as long.’’ After-hours healthcare is free for those over 65, Community Services Card holders and High User Health Card holders. It is also free for children under six at most clinics. Clinics in east Auck- land include East Care on Botany Rd, East Tamaki HealthCare and Takanini Healthcare. East Care is open 24 hours, all others are open until at least 10pm. Go to www.afterhours network.co.nz for more information. In an emergency dial 111 or go to the hospital emergency department. Keep a close eye on drinkers Just 300ml of undiluted spirits is enough to kill a young person. As people are getting into the festive mood and attending more parties, St John is reminding people to keep an eye on friends and family drinking. Medical director Dr Tony Smith says life- threatening alcohol poisoning occurs most commonly in young people who drink undiluted spirits very quickly. ‘‘It is possible for a per- son to drink a potentially fatal dose of alcohol before they start to show signs of intoxication – and then become rapidly unconscious,’’ he says. A person unconscious from alcohol poisoning and left alone has a high chance of dying. If someone appears to be unconscious shake their shoulder and shout at them – if they wake they are not unconscious. They need someone to stay with them and look after them, he says. If they do not respond to a shake and shout lay them on their side, call an ambulance, stay with them and keep them on their side. Remove vomit if it blocks the front of the mouth. ❚ For more first aid tips and to enrol in a first aid course go to www. stjohn.org.nz.
