I regularly go to community meetings and hear stories of people in our community who witness criminal activities but don't ring 111 at the time. They give various reasons why. These vary from ''I thought the police would be too busy'' or ''I thought I would pop in and tell someone at the station later'', or ''I just couldn't be bothered and didn't want to get involved''. If you witness a crime that is taking place ring 111 immediately! We need to know immediately. If you don't tell us we don't know. Things to think about when reporting information to police: What is happening ie, armed robbery, burglary, bagsnatch so that police can deploy the right staff and equipment for the job. What the environment is like if the offender is running away on foot so the police can look to utilise Delta (dog team) for tracking A good description of the people involved, including clothing, skin colour, height, body shape, any marks or tattoos and even hair colour A vehicle registration is great but if the plate is stolen a good description of the vehicle will help. Vehicle colour, mag wheels, stickers, anything added on to the vehicle like roof racks, spotlights and any other distinguishing features The direction the vehicle or person was last seen heading in. Street names are always helpful but if you don't know the area a compass direction or major landmarks that can assist in direction If you see something that you believe is not right or suspicious call police and the person on the other end of the phone will decide on the resource to send. The job might require police attendance but not straight away. They have a good understanding on how serious the situation is, given the amount of information you have given them, and how best to deploy police Finally if you witness an incident, ring 111. You never know next time you might be the victim and need to rely on members of the public around you to get a description and ring 111. Craig Hammonds Pakuranga Community Constable Visit the Neighbourhood Support website www.nsupport.co.nz Strong interest in eastern housing market Interest in homes was active in the Eastern Courier s circulation area during June at a leading real estate com- pany. The average sale price increased to $592,000 -- $28,000 higher than the average price for the past 12 months. June was another good month for values in this area, Barfoot & Thompson managing director Peter Thompson says. The strong June sales have now brought the average sale price for the rolling 12 months to $564,000 which is three per cent higher than it was at this time last year. Mr Thompson says demand for properties remains strong and the factor holding back sales is the lack of properties on the market.
