Photo: MATT BOWEN Here to there, right: The cables' projected track to the Pakuranga substation. Commuters face traffic delays Traffic delays are expected as Transpower prepares for the installation of under- ground electricity cables later this year. Over the next 12 months, trenches will be dug in stages from Dun- vegan Rise in East Tamaki Heights through to Ti Rakau Drive. Project director Paul Duffy says the cable crosses a high density residential and urban area with most of the work involving major roads and thoroughfares. Traffic management plans have been devel- oped to manage flows as efficiently as possible but delays are expected while work is under way. We are fully aware of the disruptive effect of this work, particularly for commuters and those living and working along the cable route,'' Mr Duffy says. We will do what we can to minimise these effects. I would like to apolo- gise for any incon- venience this work will cause and appreciate your patience while this critical infrastructure project is under way.'' The work is part of the North Island Grid Upgrade Project to reinforce security of supply into Auckland and Northland. It's critical to meet the growing energy demands in the upper North Island and will mean a more secure and reliable power supply to the greater Auckland region. The project, due for completion in mid-2012, involves the construction of a 186km transmission line from just north of Taupo to a new sub- station being built in Whitford. From there four underground cable circuits will be located -- two circuits to Tran- spower's Pakuranga sub- station, which is being upgraded, and at a later date, two circuits to Otahuhu substation. The contract hours of works are 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. Further notifications will be given if works are to exceed these periods.
