The band is hoping to blow the audience away at its inaugural concert this weekend. Big Band founder Hamish Arthur says he started the group to cater for student musicians who have finished school. I m an itinerant music teacher so I teach at Pakuranga College, Howick College, Edgewater, Sancta Maria and Botany Downs Secondary College, he says. I wanted to give former students who have left school a place to continue playing music. It s really frustrating for me as a teacher to see an ex-student and ask them how their music s going only to be told their saxophone or whatever is under the bed. Mr Arthur says he chose big band music because it has been increasingly popular among high school bands for the past 15 years. First of all big band music allows more people to play, he says. And it allows you to play a number of different styles like swing, Latin American, funk and rock, and Afro Caribbean, he says. There also wasn t much happening in terms of big band music in the eastern suburbs which is strange when you think that most of the schools have a jazz band. I mean, where do all these kids go when they finish school? St Andrew s Big Band has about 20 members and had its first rehearsal at the start of May. It s been a quick turnaround but it s easier to get people to focus if they have a performance to rehearse for, Mr Arthur says. At the moment it s mainly ex- music students but we also want people from the community in general to join us. The Big Band and the Howick College Jazz Band perform at St Andrew s Church Centre in Howick on June 26. Tickets cost $5 with all proceeds going to the Youth and Com- munity Development Trust.
