Photo: STEPHANIE FAWCETT By STEPHANIE FAWCETT A huge welcome will greet inter- national visitors to Auckland dur- ing the Rugby World Cup later this year. Words of welcome in 20 languages are being created by secondary schools in south Auck- land as part of an art competition for the HeART of the Nation pro- ject. Each letter will be about four metres by eight metres with the longest word of welcome in the official language of Georgia being a whopping 63 metres long. The completed words will be laid out in parks and other open spaces along domestic and inter- national flight paths leading to Auckland International Airport for visitors to see as they come in to land in September. Pakuranga College s entry in the public art installation is a wel- come sign for visitors from the United States. We ve incorporated the colours of the American flag into our design, Pakuranga College Arts Council member Sara Volc says. And we ve made use of recycled materials like canvas that was going to be thrown away and old house paint. Sara says there are more than 100 people working on the school s entry. We ve been working on the sign for about two weeks now and we ll keep going until the end of term. The art classes are working on this and the arts council helps out so there ll be more than 100 people at least helping with the painting. The welcome words will be judged by sporting personalities with the winning design receiving a prize of $2500 for their school.
