Photo: MATT BOWEN By MATT BOWEN ' It definitely has given me a more critical mind about our business and where we could improve ' Tim Guy Young business person of the year isn t something Tim Guy wears on his sleeve. There s no suit, no tie or polished leather boots -- skate shoes, facial hair and an amiable grin are more his style. But it was Tim s nose for trade that saw him collect the prestigious award during last year s Manukau Business Excellence Awards. He co-owns a successful skate, snow and wake retail store at Botany Town Centre. The other finalists were really accomplished business people, he recalls. The judges are always good at not giving much feedback at the time -- judging by their response I felt like I didn t really have a show. Tim was shocked to win but says the process and accolade are highly valuable especially on his CV. Applying is simple, he says, and it s a great process to go through whether you re a busi- ness owner or employee. It definitely has given me a more critical mind about our business and where we could improve, change and what we need to do to take it to the next level because it s not always obvious. It s really easy to sit inside a business and think you re doing well or badly but to have some- body else s perspective on how you re doing quite often changes what you think you need to do. The award is open to young entrepreneurs or business people aged 35 or under who are successfully building and man- aging their own business or to those in a chief executive, gen- eral manager or other mana- gerial position who make day- to-day decisions and are fully responsible for the company s results. Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development is running the Westpac Auckland South Business Awards 2011. Business development man- ager south Yvette Hellyer says: "The leadership course is a huge incentive for entering the young business person of the year category. While entrants will gain benefits from the award pro- cess, such as networking and increased exposure for their business, they ll also be offered this fantastic higher learning opportunity. Entries must be in before next Monday. Visit www.em.org.nz/awards for more information and entry details.
