Sri Puteri's -- Malaysia's best in east Auckland Great chefs together: Jai and Kalai from Sri Puteri's with Peter Gordon. Everywhere we look, Sri Puteri s restaurant seems to be making news. Whether it s co- owner/chef Kalai Subra- manian s TV appear- ances with celebrities Peter Gordon and Annabelle White; or accolades like The NZ Herald s number one pick of Malaysian restaurants in Auckland (April 2011); or the rave reviews by customers on restaurant web pages -- this cheerful and auth- entic Malaysian restau- rant is winning hearts and tastebuds every- where! Kalai arrived in New Zealand from Malaysia via the USA where she studied at Oklahoma State University and worked with leading chefs in Tulsa and New Orleans. Arriving in Auckland she looked for an opportunity to use her experience and talent for producing genuine Malaysian food. Taking over ownership of Sri Puteri s in Pan- mure, Kalai found a chef who shared her passion and talent for Mamak- style Malaysian cuisine -- the ever-cheerful Jamari Bin Abdul Rahman who brings a touch of theatre to this lively restaurant. Mamak cuisine comes courtesy of the southern Indian Muslim spice traders who traversed the Malacca Straits in the 14th century. It is characterised by wonder- ful sauces and fresh- daily hawker-style food normally found only in Malaysia itself. Sauces are made from scratch, using authentic ingredients with no shortcuts. And accompaniments like the light, heavenly roti are simply the best you ll find anywhere. From the extensive Mamak, Chinese and south Indian menu, cus- tomer favourites include the very traditional nasi lemak; Kalai s superb lamb curry; any of the laksa or satay dishes; Jamari s wonderful Chinese dishes Wan Tan Hor and Char Koay Teow; and Kalai s amazing Ice Kacang des- sert. You should try the ginger tea too. Nothing is over $14, and the staff at Sri Puteri s make the dining experience a happy one -- this really is service with a smile , and a true taste of Malaysia. Sri Puteri's is open Monday-Friday 10-30am to 2.30pm and 5pm to 9pm; Saturday-Sunday 10am to 9.30pm. Not licensed. 59 Queens Rd Panmure. Reservations phone 574-6775.
