Needing a home: This dog and many others at the Wiri shelter await a new home. DSS Animal Manage- ment is contracted to the Auckland Council to pro- vide animal control services to the Manukau and Franklin areas of the city. They also have the contract to manage the shelter at 33 McLaugh- lins Road, Wiri. Many of the dogs that are unclaimed or handed over by their owners are available for adoption from the shelters at Wiri and at Pukekohe. All dogs impounded are held for seven days as required by the Dog Control Act. After that time they become the property of the Council. Adopting suitable dogs to new owners or organ- isations such as MAF and the NZ Police is a high priority for the com- pany and their shelter staff. Dogs that may be suit- able for rehoming are temperament tested to ensure any significant problems the dog may have are recognised. For example a dog that has been impounded for attacking a person or another animal would not be eligible for adop- tion. Dogs that have been classified in the Dog Control Act as dangerous or are pit bull or pit bull cross are also not adopted back into the community. The majority of councils in New Zealand adhere to this policy. However, many suitable dogs are available for adoption at all times. DSS Animal Manage- ment has a very active website - www.animal- management.co.nz and many of the dogs adopted out feature on the adoption pages. There are wonderful stories of the new lives and the second chances that these dogs now have and enjoy. Shelter staff at Wiri and Pukekohe are all dog owners and most have at least one dog they have adopted. Many of Animal Management s staff also foster dogs for the Humane Society until suitable homes are found. Dogs adopted to new homes must be desexed, registered and microchi- pped before leaving the shelter. All prospective owners must also have a property inspection to ensure the dog will be going to a safe and suit- able home. Dogs impounded at the shelters are given excel- lent care and for many their days in the shelter are the best they have had. They are well fed with fresh water, shelter, exercise and the care and attention of dedicated caregivers. If you are thinking of including a dog in your family, contact the shelters -- your new best friend may be there waiting for you! To contact the shelters, phone 279-5959 for Wiri and (09) 238-4934 for Pukekohe.
