Study to reduce TV viewing for kids By PIP BOURKE Looking for Families: Midi Tsai of the AUT Clinical Trials Research Unit needs more families to volunteer for a new study. A new study at AUT could see children give up the TV for outdoor recreation. The SWITCH study is the first of its kind in New Zealand. The study run by Midi Tsai of the Clinical Trials Research Unit aims to reduce the amount of time children spend in front of the TV or computer screen. ‘‘It has been proven that the snacking that usually goes alongside watching TV leads to childhood obesity,’’ Ms Tsai says. ‘‘However there is cur- rently no evidence that being sedentary as opposed to being active has an effect on a child’s weight.’’ Ms Tsai needs Auck- land families to volun- teer for the study. ‘‘We started in March and have 17 families although we need 270,’’ she says. ‘‘An average child spends three hours and 40 minutes in front of a screen per day. ‘‘We want to reduce this and teach parents strategies to help their children break a habit.’’ The study is calling for families with children aged from nine to 12. Once participating, the families will be randomly put in one of two groups. One group will remain as normal for six months while the other will be provided with infor- mation, support, skills and strategies to get active. Interested parents can call 0800 SWITCH or email firstname.lastname@example.org land.ac.nz for details.
