IN BRIEF Option three Option three is the citizen ceremony structure for the Howick Local Board. Five options were considered at this month's meeting as part of consultation with all the region's boards. Council officers will discuss the favoured option based on a majority of board responses with the Department of Internal Affairs. Option three would see quarterly citizenship ceremonies in fixed locations hosted by Auckland south local boards. Howick poll Residents who haven't received their Howick byelection voting documents should contact the electoral office on 973-5212. Polling closes at noon on May 27. Voting documents can be returned by post or hand- delivered to the electoral office, Independent Election Services, ground floor, Bledisloe House, 24 Wellesley St West. They can also be hand- delivered to a ballot box on May 27 from 9am to noon at Pakuranga, Highland Park, Howick and Botany libraries. Garden design will bring back memories ' The design will return the garden to its previous function as a garden to be enjoyed by everyone in the community whether as a venue for wedding photography or as a peaceful place to sit and have lunch. ' Chairman Michael Williams At the end of a long rocky road the Emilia Maud Nixon Gar- den of Memories looks set for a bright future. The Howick Local Board has been working closely with council officers and landscape architects to address com- munity concerns that the pre- vious design was dominated by a concrete pathway and a timber ramp. The alternative landscaping plan for the area between the whare and folk museum has been approved and detailed design work is under way. Chairman Michael Williams says the design will return the garden to its previous function as a garden to be enjoyed by everyone in the community whether as a venue for wed- ding photography or as a peaceful place to sit and have lunch. It will also continue to be available for use as an edu- cational resource to benefit local school children. Key to the design is veg- etation obscuring the lower floor of the whare so that it blends in with the surround- ing gardens and the reintroduction of iconic bicultural elements.'' The new design draws on the garden's past including a replica bridge of remembrance and a cascading water feature. A previous feature of the garden, a replica miniature Fencible cottage, is to be rebuilt as a children's play- house. The Fencibles were retired soldiers from Britain and Ireland who enlisted as a mili- tary reserve to act as a defence force for the protection of Auckland's early settlers. It is proposed the well will be centralised and refurbished along with the pergola that marked the gateway to the original whare location. Links between the whare and the museum will also be improved to enable better ped- estrian flow between the two facilities.
