STJOHN0910 Scottish expert to hold meeting ' For over 20 years I have been collecting Boyd family trees to build a Clan Boyd pyramid which goes back prior to 1200AD. ' Mike Boyd If you have Scottish ancestry you could well be related to Mike Boyd. Mr Boyd has searched the United States and now the leading Scottish re- searcher is on the hunt for New Zealand relatives. He s chairman of the his- torical com- mittee of the House of Boyd Society which rep- resents the family worldwide. For over 20 years I have been collecting Boyd family trees and including them into Clan Boyd of Scotland. This is an effort to build a Clan Boyd pyramid which goes back prior to 1200AD and over 28 generations, he says. So far I have over 500 separate families and have filled eight volumes, and I m working on a further four. If your ancestors were from Ayrshire on the east coast of Scotland there is a good chance they had some contact with the Boyds. The Boyds had con- nections with many families including: Gifford, Montgomery, Maxwell, Stewart, Colville, Somerville, Napier, Colquhoun, Campbell, Stockdale, Wallace, Kerr, Ham- ilton, Fleming, Craik, Cun- ningham, Ross, Lockhart, Livingston, Blair, Kennedy, Muir, Crawford and Hay. Mr Boyd would like to pass on some of his knowledge at an infor- mal meeting at the Hotel Grand Chancel- lor, 175 Kirkbride Rd, Mangere, on May 12, from 6pm. Contact Boyd Miller on boydmnz@gmail. com or call 488-7595. 'Hard yards' promise Hard worker: Howick byelection candidate Maggie Burrill promises to get stuck in if she's elected to the Auckland Council this month. By MATT BOWEN Doing the hard yards is Maggie Burrill s pledge. The Howick byelection candidate reads agendas, reports and other council literature that would make many people s eyes roll. And she makes a point of attending all sched- uled meetings. Mrs Burrill is up against five candidates in this month s vote -- two of which sat on the Manukau City Council with her. The Flat Bush resi- dent will tackle the role fulltime if she wins. In the inaugural supercity elections last year she also stood as an independent but her 10,124 votes fell well short of Jami-Lee Ross 18,382. This time around she s hoping her knack for problem solving and get- ting results will appeal. In a verbal submission to this year s Auckland Council annual plan Mrs Burrill found and sought more explicit infor- mation regarding $70 million of proposed spending and the ben- efit to be obtained by or for residents if these projects proceed this financial year . I look for practical solutions and supported the transfer of the lease of Howick s senior citizens hall to Uxbridge [last year] given the seniors were able to retain use of it for their meetings. Another project she was proud to have a hand in was completion of the Clevedon Sus- tainable Development Plan. It had been an on- again off-again project for some 10 years much to the frustration of the local community. I also pushed to ensure that Flat Bush stage two was finalised -- again this was some three years overdue. These were both released for public sub- mission before Manukau went out of existence in October last year. I work hard for the community I represent and get results for them. Meanwhile, last min- ute enrolments are still being accepted for the byelection. If you haven t enrolled in time to get your voting papers in the mail you can still enrol and cast a special vote, Manukau electorate registrar of electors Maureen Han- sen says. It s getting to crunch time. Enrol or update your details now by call- ing 0800-367-656, free- texting your name and address to 3676 or at any Postshop. People who enrol between now and polling day on May 27 need to contact electoral officer Dale Ofsoske on 973-5212 about how to apply to cast a special vote.
