' Mel Giles Organiser Athletic ability was on show at the Special Olympics Secondary Schools Athletics Ribbon Day. About 200 students from around Auckland gathered at Mt Smart Stadium last week to compete in 100-metre and 200m races, shot put, softball throw and long jump categories. Organiser Mel Giles says it's great for the kids to get out there and perform. For me it's just fantastic to see them receiving their ribbons. They have a competitive side and it's providing them with an opportunity to com- pete in sport,'' she says. Representing their school also feeds into club athletics along with regional and even world competitions for the athletes. Thirty volunteers from ANZ Bank helped out on the day giving out ribbons and running various events. Volunteer Amanda Grace says it was fantastic to be involved. It's so much fun -- their spirits were so high and you learn a lot from the kids as well.''
