It sets out the council's plans for the year 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012, and the budget required to make them happen. It outlines Auckland Council's proposal to undertake $773 million worth of capital works in 2011/2012, and spend $1.8 billion on providing services. It's your rates that help pay for council projects in your local area and across the region, making Auckland a great place to live. Soon you will find a summary of the draft annual plan in your letterbox, which includes a freepost feedback form. We are interested to hear your feedback on the draft annual plan along with amendments we are proposing to our long-term plan. You can do this online or through the freepost form. Copies of the documents and feedback forms are available • at any library • any council service centre • online at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz • call us (09) 301 0101. Submissions close at 4pm Friday, 1 April 2011. Find out more: phone 09 301 0101 or visit www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz RW_AK8749_SBN2 IT'S TIME TO TELL US WHAT YOU THINK IN BRIEF Cenotaph service An outdoor memorial service for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake will be held at the Auckland Domain cenotaph this evening. The ceremony follows the National Memorial Service in Christchurch that mayor Len Brown attended on behalf of the people of Auckland. The hour-long Auckland memorial service will take place at 7pm. Those who attend will be encouraged to light candles and may lay flowers at the cenotaph after the ceremony. Mr Brown says it's important we take time to reflect on Christchurch's loss, spirit, courage and resilience as we continue to work with the people of Canterbury in their time of need. Aucklanders can also leave messages of support in condolence books at the Auckland Town Hall and any Auckland library. Leadership awards The search is on for New Zealand's greatest emerging leader. Nominations are now being accepted for The 2011 Sir Peter Blake Trust leadership awards. The Blake Medal celebrates a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the country, and the Sir Peter Blake Emerging Leader Award recognises and encourages six younger leaders. The majority of past Blake leaders were nominated by others without their knowledge so organisers encourage people to think about people in their community who inspire them. Nominations close April 26. For more information go to www.sirpeterblaketrust. org. Village has country fair Quirky character: Sue Popping from the Howick Historical Village education department shows off their vegetable character for the competition on Sunday's live day. Photo: KRISTINA RAPLEY By KRISTINA RAPLEY Cherry tomato eyes, apple cucumber body and a capsi- cum top hat. These are just some of the possibilities when creating a vegetable character. Howick Historical Village wants children to get creative and make their own quirky creation for the vegetable character competition at this Sunday's live day. Live day co-ordinator Kathy Bigwood wants kids to have fun with it. We're looking for humour, keep it light and quirky.'' This Sunday's theme Sum- mer Country Fair is always a highlight on the village's cal- ender. Derek the heritage gardener will be judging the vegetable competition as well as taking a tour of the village garden. There will be a produce and homemade preserves stall and old-fashioned fairground games like throw the woolsack and splat the rat. Auckland accordion player and singer Lionel Reekie will give a special performance, as well as Scottish piper Angus McKay. The Howick Historical Vil- lage live day is this Sunday from 10am to 4pm on Bells Rd, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Normal admission fees apply. Call 576-9506 or visit www.fencible.org.nz. LOCAL PIX www.localpix.co.nz Go to www.eastern courier.co.nz to see Lionel Reekie performing.
