Photo: KRISTINA RAPLEY What says New Zealand more than a giant sheep decorated with Kiwiana images? That s exactly what the Auckland Council thought when they dreamed up the Whacky Sheep Competition. The Manukau Beauti- fication Trust organised the project that s set to be one of many welcom- ing international visitors to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup. Com- panies, community groups and schools were invited to design and paint a giant sheep in any Kiwiana style. All entries will be judged by a representa- tive from the NZ Rugby Union and the winners will receive a cheque for $1500. Six art students from Macleans, Pakuranga and Botany Downs colleges joined forces to tackle the task. Their design incorp- orates all things Kiwi including the Four Square man, nature and Maori culture. Botany Downs Secon- dary College student Rachel Desplaces, 18, says it s been a lot of fun and will definitely be a highlight of her last year at college. The location for the completed sheep is yet to be confirmed but it will be somewhere visitors will see on arrival.
