Athletes take off for colleagues Athletes at heart: Rachel Penney, left, and Melanie Cossar survived last year's Christchurch earthquake -- now they're running to raise funds for athletes suffering after the second big shake. Photo: MATT BOWEN By MATT BOWEN Runners hearts will pump for their Christchurch counter- parts on Saturday. The Pakuranga Athletic Club s senior and cross- country committee is holding a fun run and walk to raise money for their struggling southern mates. The devastating earthquake is close to home for runners Rachel Penney and Melanie Cossar. Both experienced the mag- nitude 7.1 quake last Sept- ember. The latest deadly shake has brought home just how lucky they were. The fun run is a small way club members and other fitness enthusiasts can show their support for the devastated community, organiser Jackie Russell says. Many members of Pakuranga Athletic Club have competed in Christchurch throughout the years. And many have friends, family and running buddies in the garden city. The casual run or walk is open to all ages and abilities. It will be a simple course out and back from the Lloyd Elsmore Park clubrooms and participants can choose their distance. Some club members will aim for an hour-long run. Members of the public are welcome to join in at the clubrooms off Cascades Rd at 1.45pm on March 12. Entry is $5 for adults and a gold coin donation for under- 19s. All proceeds go to the Can- terbury earthquake appeal. IN BRIEF Guardian Angel Every three days a child is hospitalised at the hand of another. The newly formed Family Works Guardian Angel initiative is aiming to change that statistic. Family violence is not a single outburst but builds gradually until breaking point, spokesperson Jude Simpson says. Family Works hopes to help more families before they reach that point. Ms Simpson says the new Guardian Angel campaign aims to get help for the many families queuing for their services. People can sponsor the service by donating $1 a day to be used in the sponsor's own region. Family Works services include counselling, parenting programmes and child therapy. Go to www.angel.org.nz. Question time Parents will have the opportunity to squeeze as much information as possible from school counsellors at an upcoming information evening. Botany Secondary School counsellors are opening up to anyone interested. They will take questions on parenting teenagers at the school staffroom on March 23 from 7pm. Email b.divehall@bdsc. school.nz to register for catering purposes.
