It kicked off at sella.co.nz on February 22. Among the items on sale are holidays, sport- ing goods, electronics, jewellery, art and the chance to meet celebrities. Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind chief executive Sandra Budd says the auction will be a wonderful opportunity to raise essential funds for the programme. Thanks to the incred- ible work of Bayleys staff and the generosity of individuals, businesses and organisations around the country for donating items, the auc- tion is shaping up to be an exciting event --- with great bargains and sought-after items on offer,'' Ms Budd says. The auction runs until March 8. A slick initiative Be oil wise: Shannon Thickpenny is encouraging people to use the free oil recycling scheme. Photo: NICOLA WILLIAMS By NICOLA WILLIAMS Even those with an ingrained recycling men- tality may overlook a product that seriously harms the environment. People can now dis- pose of the small quantities of oil in an eco-friendly manner. Oil can be dropped off to recycle bins at Repco stores throughout the region or Total Lubri- cants' East Tamaki office on Springs Rd. We are very proactive about recycling our plas- tics and glass these days but people forget about oil,'' Total Lubricants regional manager Shan- non Thickpenny says. The Auckland Council pilot initiative runs for three years. It aims to ensure the majority of used engine oil is recycled or disposed of appropriately. Auckland Council infrastructure and en- vironmental services manager John Dragice- vich says Aucklanders produce an estimated 656,000 litres of used oil annually but only a third is believed to be disposed of safely. The rest causes environmental harm. One litre of used engine oil can contami- nate one million litres of water. Mr Dragicevich says surveys showed the majority of households did not have access to safe disposal services. Auckland Council environment and sus- tainability committee chairman Wayne Walker says systems already existed for collection of used oil from high- volume generators like mechanics, but this was a first for those with a lower volume.
