The earthquake that hit Christchurch last Tuesday has been a big reminder to myself in ensuring my family is prepared for disaster. Community is important during a natural disaster both in terms of being prepared and in supporting one another through the tough times. People in Christchurch have learnt from the September earthquake to put systems in place so that if -- and it did -- it ever occurred again they could respond quickly and efficiently. This is no doubt serving them well right now and I believe we need to take their lead and plan before an event comes to us. Do you know what you would do in a natural disaster? Do you have a survival kit at home or work ready to go at any time? Do you have a meeting place for family and friends if communication is down? Do you have a plan? These days most of us don't know our neighbours so it could be a good time to get to know each other a little better and plan for any situation as you never know who will need help. It is so easy to slip into the mind set of ''she'll be right and it'll never happen to us''. Remember if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. So I ask this of you, that you read the back of the yellow pages about Civil Defence and what you need to do to get prepared. Make a game plan on what you would do in a natural disaster --- where you would meet family and friends. Organise food, water and supplies to be available in your family's time of need. Now is a good time to back up important documents and make copies of information that you may need or could lose. Unfortunately, as we witnessed in Christchurch in September, there can be looting and so you need to ensure you have appropriate records of precious or valuable possessions.
