Photo: KRISTINA RAPLEY IT S a little theatre with a big heart. Kathy Bigwood of Howick Little Theatre came up with a way to help after hearing news of the deadly earth- quake that battered Christ- church. The theatre group is con- tributing all proceeds from its March 22 performance of The Birthday Boy to the Red Cross Canterbury Quake Appeal. Ms Bigwood says they expect the amount to be at least $5000 which is a lot of money for a small community organisation. Iticket supplies tickets to the theatre and has agreed to waive fees for the night. Director Julian Harrison says the cast and crew think it s a great idea. The news kind of took the wind out of us at rehearsals and we didn t have time to stop and take it all in. To be able to do something like this helps to keep us focused. Playwright Carl Nixon lives in Christchurch and although he and his family are all okay, his house and belongings are badly damaged. There are a lot of people down here who have a great need so it s just fantastic that Howick Little Theatre is doing this, he says. The Auckland premiere of The Birthday Boy is this Saturday and the show will run until March 26. It s a New Zealand comedy exploring middle-class life and 25 years of family, friendship and careers. There are a lot for people to identify with, director Jul- ian Harrison says. You can book online at www.iticket.co.nz or call the theatre on 534-1406. Visit www.hlt.org.nz for more information. Botany joins in Every little contribution makes a difference. Botany Town Centre is chipping in to the nationwide fundraising effort to help those affec- ted by the earthquake. People can make a donation at the Visitors Centre outside Farmers. Town centre senior centre manager Jennifer Andrews says donations from the community would be greatly appreciated. Our thoughts and condolences are with everyone affected by the devastating earthquake and the ongoing aftershocks. With the help of the local community we are keen to support the people of Christchurch asmuchaswecanin their time of need. Visit www.botany towncentre.co.nz for information. Donations can also be made online at www.redcross.org.nz or any branch of Post- Shop Kiwibank, ASB and ANZ banks. Red Cross is not accepting offers of volunteers or donated goods at the moment.
