Photo: FIONA GOODALL By NICOLA WILLIAMS A couple has gracefully taken a haul of golds on the dance floor. Barbara and Peter Holmes competed in the Masters Games in Wanganui this month. The competition is fiercely contested by over-35s in 64 different sports. About 62 couples took to the dance floor to vie for a coveted place in various styles. Mrs Holmes won four golds and one bronze while Mr Holmes took five gold and one bronze. The couple danced in some sections together and picked up medals with other dance partners in others. At 75, Mr Holmes was the oldest competitor. Showing that talent runs in the family, the couple's daugh- ter Anthea also picked up a gold and a bronze. The three times new vogue champions are also unde- feated for 10 years in classical sequence dancing. They have competed here and overseas for many years but the thrill of competition and placings never wears off. You get a big buzz when you do it and dressing up makes you feel good,'' Mrs Holmes says. The Burswood couple gives private lessons in ballroom, new vogue and classical sequence. It's a passion that is not likely to ever wear off. We'll dance till we drop, it's our lifestyle,'' Mrs Holmes says. I can't ever remember not dancing. I get a lot of pleasure from it -- it's relaxing and makes you forget your stress.'' Mr and Mrs Holmes have been dancing together for 50 years after meeting at a Friday night dance. Mr Holmes says he gets absorbed in the emotion of the music and dancing with his wife. And he says he's proud to provide such good competition for younger dancers. With far too many trophies to go on display Mrs Holmes is quick to name her proudest accomplishment. My biggest achievement was dancing with Peter in classical sequence and new vogue because it's something we can do together.'' Go to www. easterncour ier.co.nz to watch Mr and Mrs Holmes dance.
