Rogers, 67, MP for the Otara and Howick electorates in Auckland between 1990 and 1996, started a company aiming to develop and sell unmanned stealth helicopters from an Auckland warehouse. He was jailed last Wednesday for one month by an Auckland High Court judge who said he and his wife Glenda Rogers had con- tinuously lied to the court. Rogers company had spent nearly $40 million developing designs and a prototype of the Snark helicopter which aimed to be virtually invisible to radar, reach speeds of 280kmh, stay airborne for 24 hours and carry a payload of 680kg. The Rogers own 56 percent of the company. Rogers had sought to export the Snark but was blocked by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on the grounds that it could be used as a cruise missile. Receivers were called in to recover debts in April 2008 but Rogers told them all the assets, including intellectual property, had already been sold or destroyed. However, court- ordered searches in August 2008 and May 2009 turned up assets in the possession or con- trol of the Rogers, Jus- tice Peter Woodhouse said in his judgement in December. The defendants have admitted misleading the court and others, and in some cases deliberately lying to the court, and to others, in stating on earlier occasions that they had disposed of other assets. . The Rogers were ordered to give up infor- mation about any further assets by January 21. That did not happen and last Wednesday Rogers was jailed for contempt. In 2005, Rogers unveiled the Snark as a military aircraft at the Paris Air Show and later said it could have search and rescue applications in high altitude ter- ritories like Mt Everest.
