Photo: MATT BOWEN Tank spills a wall of water By MATT BOWEN An act of God struck the grounds of St Mark s Anglican Church on Monday. The plastic water tank at the Maraetai property s community garden split, sending a torrent over the strawberry bed, under the church and into the carpark. Gardener Anna Rugis was astounded. We don t know what happened, she says. I suppose it was full -- it just split. I got a call from a friend who said he was driving up Maraetai Drive and there was a wall of water coming at him. Luckily it didn t hit any cars. She says it went clean over one thigh-high raised bed and debris was left hanging a metre high on the fence. However most of the garden was untouched, just really well watered . On one hand it s a blessing nobody was hurt. On the other, a curse. The flourishing community gar- den has now lost its water source. Ms Rugis says they ll need about $3300 for a replacement tank, associated pipes and fittings. She says Franklin Local Board member Lance Gedge and council- lor Des Morrison are investigating possible solutions. In the meantime gardeners are hoping to keep the soil moist with help from a neighbouring build- ing. Call Anna on 536-4994 to get involved in the community gar- den.
