The Commerce Commission says customers must be told that some jewellery has been plated with rho- dium and could require regular main- tenance. White gold is commonly rhodium plated to enhance the colour and pro- tect the surface from scratches, and rhodium electroplating is sometimes used on silver to keep it from tarnishing. The warning came after a recent Disputes Tribunal case that found a customer should have been told a white gold engagement ring was rho- dium plated and might need regular re-plating. The Commerce Commission has written to the jewellery industry outlining that it's important con- sumers are not misled about the nature of jewellery they are buying. Consumers are entitled to receive all information necessary for them to make a fully informed decision about goods before they purchase,'' says com- mission enforcement manager Greg Allan. If they are not given relevant infor- mation this may place the retailer at risk of breaching the Fair Trading Act.''
