Board aims to reach out Getting residents en- gaged with the Howick local board is a chal- lenge. So the board has asked council officers to investigate ways for them to reach out to the community. They include domain names for a purpose- built website, develop- ing a forum to cover Maori concerns such as the Garden of Memor- ies and volcanic cone management as well as installing a business leader's network. Officers have also been requested to work with the ethnic affairs portfolio team and the ethnic communities to develop a forum that would enable them to get involved in the democratic process. Officers will report back soon. Managing animals and people Dog lovers: Animal management shelter worker Monique gets plenty of affection from a black labrador waiting to be collected. Photo: NICOLA WILLIAMS By NICOLA WILLIAMS A big part of Animal Manage- ment is people management. The East Tamaki-based company is contracted to enforce dog control laws on behalf of the city council. Much of their work is pick- ing up wandering dogs and caring for them at their shel- ter. But making sure people abide by the dog laws, are educated about dogs and ensuring disputes are mediated, makes it largely about people. Animal Management also offers free education programmes to schools and the community. Our company philosophy is we are the fence at the top of the cliff, not the ambulance at the bottom,'' education manager Tricia Gillingwater says. Specialised education programmes include respon- sible ownership, bite preven- tion for community workers and dog training. The feedback we get is that people don't realise how much difference having a well-trained animal makes,'' she says. Staff are also responsible for collecting animals on the motorway. Roaming dogs are taken to a shelter where owners have seven days to claim them. Unclaimed animals are put up for adoption and offered to agencies such as MAF, cus- toms and police or taken for fostering by the Humane Society. The ones that don't have good temperaments are euth- anised. The shelter has 50 to 80 dogs at any one time. Mrs Gillingwater says the staff are all passionate dog lovers. For some dogs in the shel- ter the last week of their lives is the best they have had. They are fed well, given exercise, attention, and any vet treatment they need -- a contrast to the way some cruel and negligent owners have treated them. Euthanising dogs is the toughest part of the job for staff but it is done in the most humane way possible, Mrs Gillingwater says. There are also many heart- warming moments with animals being reunited with owners amid tears of happi- ness and seeing dogs become high performers at agencies they are sent to.
