XM01 Looking after Auckland Harbour Bridge Handyman does the job Making a difference: Age Concern's new handyman Peter Freestone helps people like Heather Hall with small jobs around the house. Photo: SHANE WENZLICK By MELISSA KINEALY Nothing's worse than not being able to get the little things done. Manurewa widow Heather Hall knows all about that frustration. Now thanks to a free Age Concern handyman service she's ticking the little jobs off her to-do list. Peter Freestone's handyman role is a dir- ect response to requests from seniors attending Age Concern's Counties Manukau network meetings. Mrs Hall heard about the new service at Age Concern's office and jumped at the chance to use it. So far, Mr Freestone's relocated her smoke alarm, moved a picture for her and put a grip in the bathroom. I ring and get him to come out and it works very well,'' Mrs Hall says. My husband was Mr Fix-it and now that I'm onmyownIwriteouta list of things to do and get Peter to help me with them. He's easy to have around.'' Mr Freestone, an elec- trician by trade, says a lot of clients tell him they don't want to be a nuisance to friends and family and are grateful for the handyman help. I think of it like a one- stop shop. There's a huge variety of work from clearing gutters to dusting.'' Mr Freestone does small jobs that take less than an hour and will advise clients when things like leaking cylinders require a tradesman. He also helps link them with other senior services such as St John. Phone Age Concern on 279-4331 ext 800 to inquire about the free handyman service. The office reopens on Janu- ary 10.
