Photo: FIONA GOODALL A police officer who won an award for bravery doesn't think his selfless actions were anything special. But it's not a view shared by those who honoured him with a prestigious District Com- mander's Award. Constable Andrew Readings was on the scene minutes after a car left the road and landed in a stormwater overflow pond on Ormiston Rd in July last year. He didn't think twice about jumping into the cold murky waters to rescue the woman driver. Without knowing how deep the water was he swam to the car and tried unsuccessfully to open each of the car doors which were submerged in water. Mr Readings used cables on a tow truck to lift a corner of the overturned car and open the driver's door. He pulled the woman's body from the car and ambulance staff tried to resuscitate her. He then searched the area to make sure there weren't others involved in the acci- dent. Although he doesn't think his actions were anything remarkable the incident is not one he will forget. This one will stay with me for the rest of my life.'' He insists he was just doing his job. You don't do it for an award,'' he says. Afterwards Mr Readings went home for a hot shower before completing the rest of his shift. Road policing manager inspector Heather Wells says Mr Readings was very worthy of the recognition. Andrew went above the call of duty and tried to save the young lady by going in and under the water. He was very upset when he lost in his attempt to bring her out alive. His actions were spontaneous and without thinking of himself. He is very deserving of the award. Andrew is well respected among his peers in the road crime unit and is always quick to respond to emergencies,'' Mrs Wells says. The award recognises pro- fessionalism, commitment to the community and actions which are in the highest traditions of the New Zealand police''.
