A promising new tech- nique called speech map- ping is now available in Applied Hearing clinics to make speech sounds clearer for hearing aid wearers. The standard hearing aid set-up is based around your ability to hear steady signals such as artificial' tones and noise. Applied Hearing audiologist Alan Fer- guson says speech map- ping goes one step further by feeding in dynamic signals such as speech -- for example your spouse's voice -- or random speech noise through loudspeakers. The results measured by a tiny microphone are displayed on a computer screen to let you see' what is being heard. If you still have some difficulty or discomfort understanding speech - even if your aids were fit- ted years ago -- this tech- nique will re-programme your aids to address this,'' says Alan. That's better than leaving them gathering dust in the drawer, and at a fraction of the cost of new instruments.'' Studies so far suggest that this assessment of your hearing aid's per- formance can be more accurate and lead to bet- ter outcomes. This is because you and your family become part of the verification process, plus better pro- gramming results in making speech clearer -- while avoiding loudness. The speech mapping process takes about 45 minutes, including a new hearing test. The result is much bet- ter speech perception with your aids, and some amazing information that will help you under- stand how your aid works. Speech mapping is available at Applied Hearing's clinics at Selwyn House Medical Centre, Howick and at 232 Great South Rd, Remuera. Bringing along this article will save you $10 off the speech mapping cost of $140 per aid. Remember to bring along someone whom you regularly speak with, either a family member or friend because they too can participate. Applied Hearing, the oldest private hearing aid clinic in New Zealand, offers a free comprehensive hearing test, including audiogram and ear examination, to anyone aged 50 years plus.
