The stand-alone busi- ness unit of the Auck- land Council earned the community award for the Adults in Action pro- gramme and the club support individual award for operational team leader Ritua Aliivaa's tireless support of all seven of Manukau Leisure's gyms. Manukau Leisure was commended by the judges for running a pro- gramme that encouraged community members into exercise who would have otherwise never entered a gym. Our vision is to ensure healthy, vibrant, active communities,'' general manager Caro- line Newton says. That means we don't just run programmes that appeal to the main- stream, we work hard to encourage the diverse communities that we serve to get active.'' The organisation deve- lops and operates Manu- kau's recreation, fitness and aquatic programmes as well as delivering community hall hire and childcare services. Manukau Leisure had seven finalists in the running for 2010 fitness industry awards. Also in with a chance were: Marina Fitness -- club of the year (under 500 members), Manu- rewa Aquatic Centre -- club of the year (1500 plus members), Taroi Tofilau -- gym instructor of the year, Marina Fit- ness -- sight and sound and Sydney Dickenson -- people's choice. Judging includes assessment by a panel, mystery shopper and member testimony pre- sided over by AUT senior lecturer in fitness and exercise Dr Nigel Harris.
