Safety on the water Boaties are urged to make water safety a pri- ority and give equipment a stringent inspection before they take to the water. Coastguard Northern Region warns batteries are likely to require charging or replacing, old or stale fuel will need to be replaced and the fuel filters should be checked for water. Safety equipment including flares, life- jackets, torches and locator beacons need to be checked to make sure they haven't expired or been misplaced. We also can't stress enough the importance of communications and communications equip- ment when out on the water,'' Coastguard chief executive Bruce Reid says. Without a working marine VHF radio, flares or locator beacons, it is impossible to alert Coastguard if you get into difficulty. Another added secur- ity measure is to ensure skippers always log a trip report via their VHF radio advising where they are heading and how long they expect to be,'' Mr Reid says. Boaties should ensure there is enough fuel for the trip and extra for unexpected delays or bad weather. The engine should be run and they should check everything is working before head- ing out on the water. It is important to have basic life saving equip- ment on board such as marine flares and life jackets that fit correctly. The marine forecast should be checked before departing and then regu- larly while on the water. Go to www.coastguard. org.nz for information. Open meeting policy An open meeting policy has been adopted by the newly formed Auckland Transport organisation. The board voted to hold meetings in public at its inaugural meeting last month. Chairman Mark Ford says they wanted an open and transparent approach to decision- making.
