The economic and social consequences of drinking and driving are simply staggering. Alcohol-related crashes in New Zealand cost millions of dollars each year and the emotional and psychological trauma, caused to victims and their families is simply unquantifiable. Alcohol increases both the likelihood of a crash occurring and the seriousness of the injury sustained. As the blood alcohol level rises, the risk of crash involvement rapidly increases. If you drink and drive (with a blood alcohol level over 80mg per 100ml) you are 16 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a sober driver. If you are aged 15 to 19 years, you are 86 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash. People with a high blood alcohol level are more likely to be injured or killed in a crash than those who are sober. Many drunk drivers killed have blood alcohol levels well in excess of the legal limit. Over half who test positive have a blood alcohol level over 150mg/100ml (the legal limit is 80mg/100ml). There are various ways to avoid drinking and driving: Give your keys to the bartender or a friend. Find a designated driver who will stay sober. Key the telephone number of a taxi company into your cell phone. Have a friend or family member on standby in case you need a ride. My personal favourite not mentioned above is, holding one's self to a higher standard. This means a self declaration: "I do not drink and drive". Please remember that drinking and driving is a crime.
