A free eight month part-time programme provides the basic know- ledge to those keen on growing successful plants. Courses offer a good mix of theory and practice, leading to the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 2. By joining the pro- gramme, students reap the benefit of a fantastic combination of distance learning with the assist- ance of a dedicated and experienced training facilitator, who will pro- vide regular support, workshops and tutorials to make the information more relevant to students. The programme covers plant botany, propa- gation, soils, amenity horticulture and crop protection along with the safe use of horticultural chemicals. Field trips, weekly tutorials and monthly workshops are ideal for fitting in with work and family commitments. Tutor Kam Naidu has a wide ranging inter- national background. He was a senior lecturer in crop science at the National University of Fiji for 11 years, and has also worked and taught in Australia and Samoa. His special interests include crop production, agronomy, crop protec- tion and horticultural research. Kam keeps in touch with his students on a regular basis and is always available to assist when needed. Enrolments for 2011 are open now and will close by December 10. Students can start their courses during the Christmas break if they choose. There are no minimum qualifications for enrolment for students aged 20 and up, and the courses are fully government subsidised so there is no cost to students.
