Role reversal part of the fun By KRISTINA RAPLEY Arabian nights: Howick Children's and Youth Theatre is performing Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp this month. From left: Yi Zhang, 14, as the Genie of the lamp, Phoebe McCreath, 14, is Aladdin and Eileen Jolly, 14, plays the Genie of the ring. Photo: FIONA GOODALL Role reversal is all part of the fun in this per- formance of Aladdin. The story of Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp is being performed by the Howick Children s & Youth Theatre in the form of a musical panto- mime. Aladdin is played by a girl and his mother the dame is played by a boy staying true to tra- ditional British panto- mime style. Theatre founder and director Gair McRae says the cast of 34 has been working hard on their singing and dancing. She can t wait to see it on stage. What I enjoy about every production is see- ing the development of the kids, and we ve got a really great cast for this one. They are a really good, hard-working bunch of kids, Ms McRae says. Phoebe McCreath is playing the mischievous Aladdin. She says the perform- ance will be entertaining and exciting for audiences. I love the story of Aladdin so it s going to be awesome being in this production, Phoebe says. Performances are at Uxbridge Theatre on November 25 and 26 at 7.30pm and November 27and28at1pmand 4pm. Uxbridge gallery is at 35 Uxbridge Rd, Howick. Tickets are $7 each. Phone 537-4943 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to make a booking.
