Last tram at Motat Iamthelasttramisa nod to the nifty 50s. Motat's latest show- case offers visitors a snapshot of Auckland in a time of post-war trans- formation. The newly-opened ex- hibition details changes to society as well as the period's tragedies. Tram 89 is the sym- bolic centrepiece. The last tram, 242, was demolished in 2006 so Motat has kept its memory alive by restor- ing tram 89. It's a faithful repro- duction of how the last tram on Auckland's streets looked on Decem- ber 26, 1956. The exhibition runs until 2011. Visit www.motat.org. nz for details. Treats come in small boxes By KRISTINA RAPLEY Spreading goodwill: Beachlands School students Sabrina-Kay Eagleton, 11, back, Kate Mckie, 9, and Georgia Todd, 6, deliver boxes for their Christmas food appeal. Photo: SHANE WENZLICK It's the little box with a big heart. Beachlands School students have been busy delivering 1500 hand-decorated boxes to homes over the past week with a special Christmas message inside. They are asking people to fill the boxes with non- perishable food items to help the needy over the holiday season. Sabrina-Kay Eagleton, 11, says everybody is really excited about helping people less fortunate than them- selves. We want people to think about all the stuff they get to eat on Christmas day and then think about those people who can't afford to buy all those nice things.'' People can drop off their donations anytime before December 3 at the Beachlands Four Square supermarket, Beachlands post shop or the school office during school hours. Students will then collect the donations and sort them for collection by The Salvation Army, Auckland City Mission, East Auckland Women's Ref- uge and Beachlands Com- munity Food Bank. Programme facilitator for the East Auckland Women's Refuge, Christine Cowan- James says food parcels are in high demand over Christmas time so the donations will be put to great use. It's just fantastic for us to have support from the local community,'' she says. It's great that the students realise there are other families out there that are not in such a good place.'' Parent and PTA member Suanne Kanzig says donations of any size will be greatly appreciated. For more information call the school office on 536-6757. IN BRIEF Board budget Figures are in for the Howick Local Board budget. Members informally met yesterday to crunch the numbers prepared by the Auckland Transition Agency. The board will be responsible for total expenditure of $32.1 million with a net operating expenditure of $161 per person. Chairman Michael Williams says that's close to the $165 average for all local boards. Major expenditure items for the board include libraries, parks, recreation and leisure facilities. The budgets provide a basis for the Auckland Council to develop a local board agreement for 2011-2012. Festive pizza Deserving families will get a chance for a dinner on Domino's. ''We want to help take the pressure off Kiwi families in the lead-up to the holiday season by providing dinner on Domino's, delivered right to the door,'' Domino's Pizza general manager Josh Kilimnik says. Three families each week in the lead up to Christmas will win a dinner. Email dinner@dominos pizza.co.nz with the name, address and phone number of yourself or your nominee with 250 words on why the family is deserving.
