stuff.co.nz Scholarship to improve Kelly’s Mandarin skills Kelly Blythen is about to swap her Kiwi summer for a semester in China. She has been awarded a Prime Minister’s Scholarship to study at Peking University in Beijing. The Eastern Beach resident graduated from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Chinese language, in 2014 and is now studying for her graduate diploma in interpreting. Blythen says she is extremely excited to study Chinese at Peking University. ‘‘The great thing about this scholarship, is that it gives applicants the freedom to choose where they want to study – which country, which institution,’’ she says. ‘‘While in Beijing, I hope to improve my Mandarin in all aspects – speaking, listening, reading, and writing.’’ This is not Blythen’s first trip to China. She spent a year studying at Fudan University in Shanghai after winning a Mandarin speech competition. Blythen has also been honing her interpreting in her job at aGP clinic and in the future she wants to put her language skills to use working as an interpreter in New Zealand hospitals. ‘‘Learning a language opens up a wide range of career options, as not only can you speak another language, but you can also understand another culture,’’ she says. AUT School of Languages senior lecturer Ineke Crezee recommended Blythen for the scholarship and believes she will be an outstanding ambassador for New Zealand. ‘‘Kelly’s interest in Chinese language and culture date back to her early teens, when she started working for a Chinese family in the small town of Paparoa in Northland,’’ Crezee says. ‘‘It was this experience that triggered Kelly’s interest in Chinese language and culture.’’ Blythen will complete her post- graduate studies on her return from China. The Prime Minister’s Scholar- ship for Asia is a scholarship programme funded by the New Zealand government and administered by Education New Zealand. Established in June 2013, the scholarship is awarded to individuals and covers costs relating to study or research in Asia. The programme aims to strengthen New Zealand’s ability to engage with key Asian trading partners and improve our workforce’s international skillset.
